Strategic Communication in European Projects: Much More Than Publishing Content

Securing European funding is only the first step. For an innovation to generate real impact, it needs to reach the right people: the industrial sector, policymakers, and citizens, among others. Communication is not just a final embellishment; it is the engine that drives visibility, accelerates technological adoption, and ensures that the social impact of public investment becomes a reality.

In the previous two articles, we analyzed why Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation (C&D&E) are fundamental to generating impact in European projects, and we clarified the differences between these three disciplines. In this new installment, we focus on the first one: communication, exploring how a strategy based on branding, narrative, and the right formats can transform scientific results into stories capable of connecting with industry, public administrations, and society.

The Challenge of Scientific Communication: Translating Complexity Without Losing Rigor

European projects operate at the frontier of innovation. Renewable hydrogen, digital twins, artificial intelligence, new materials, or industrial cybersecurity are part of the daily life of many consortia. However, those who must adopt these solutions—companies, public administrations, investors, or even other researchers—do not always share the same technical language.

Here lies one of the biggest challenges of scientific communication: explaining complex technologies without losing the rigor that defines them.

Communicating does not mean simplifying to the point of stripping a project of its content. It means contextualizing it. Explaining what problem exists, why it needed to be solved, and how the developed solution can generate a tangible impact on industry, society, or the environment.

People rarely remember a project simply because it reached a certain Technology Readiness Level (TRL). They remember it because they understand what challenge it addresses and why that progress can change a concrete reality. In other words, they remember the story, not just the technology.

That is precisely the goal of scientific storytelling: building a bridge between technical excellence and the real needs of people.

Throughout this article, we will use the European project LuxHyVal as a narrative thread, in which R2M Spain leads the communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities.

LuxHyVal (Luxembourg Hydrogen Valley) is a large-scale initiative funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the Horizon Europe program. Its main objective is to create a green hydrogen valley in southern Luxembourg, deploying a 6 MW electrolyzer to replace natural gas consumption in heavy industry and supply clean fuel to public transport and logistics fleets.

Through this case study, we will show how a communication strategy can accompany a project from defining its identity and narrative to creating content capable of generating visibility and impact.

The Pillars of an In-House Communication Strategy for Consortia

An effective communication strategy does not emerge spontaneously as the project progresses. It is built from the start through a series of decisions that will lend coherence to all communications throughout the consortium’s three or four years of life. At R2M Spain, we approach this process through three fundamental pillars: a solid brand identity, a narrative tailored to each audience, and an omnichannel strategy capable of delivering the message right where its audience actually is.

1. Brand Identity and Branding: Much More Than a Logo

Brand identity is the first element that makes a project stand out within the European R&D&i ecosystem. Every year, hundreds of new initiatives funded by Horizon Europe are born, and all compete for the attention of researchers, companies, public administrations, and other projects.

That is why branding goes far beyond logo design. It consists of building a coherent visual identity that accompanies the project from day one: a recognizable color palette, typography, graphic resources, templates for presentations and deliverables, event materials, and a shared visual style that facilitates brand recognition across any channel.

This consistency ensures that every new piece of content helps reinforce the project’s identity rather than becoming an isolated asset.

The LuxHyVal Case: 

In developing LuxHyVal, the main challenge was projecting an image that conveyed technological innovation while also reflecting sustainability and local energy sovereignty. At R2M, we designed a fresh, modern visual identity featuring a color palette that blends the green tones of ecological transition with the blues associated with clean hydrogen technology. Furthermore, we developed a complete branding kit (official deliverable templates, email signatures, social media adaptions, and visual guides) allowing the 17 consortium partners to communicate with a single voice, guaranteeing a professional and unified image before the European Commission and the industrial sector from day one.

2. Narrative and Key Messages: Finding the Story Behind the Technology

Even projects with the highest scientific excellence can pass unnoticed if they fail to clearly explain why their work is relevant. Before planning content, it is necessary to define a narrative that serves as a common thread throughout the life of the project.

This narrative translates into a series of key messages capable of adapting to different audiences without losing coherence. Communicating with a specialized researcher is not the same as communicating with a company, a public administration, or a journalist. However, all of them must recognize the same core idea regarding what problem the project solves and what impact it aims to achieve.

To build this narrative, it is helpful to start with four fundamental questions:

  • What problem are we solving?
  • Why is it important to solve it now?
  • What does our solution bring compared to existing alternatives?
  • What impact will it have when it reaches the market or society?

Answering these questions allows for the creation of an elevator pitch: a brief, clear, and consistent explanation that serves as the starting point for all project communications. This message is not intended to replace technical content, but rather to synthesize the essence of the project so that any interlocutor quickly understands its purpose and relevance.

The LuxHyVal Case: 

In LuxHyVal, the technical challenge involved explaining the installation of a 6 MW electrolyzer at the Bascharage Industrial Park to produce green hydrogen using local solar and wind power. If the narrative had remained focused strictly on equipment power or process chemistry, it would have been abstract for most of the audience.

At R2M, we built a multi-level narrative structured around energy sovereignty and local decarbonization:

  • The Problem? High dependence on fossil fuels (natural gas and diesel) in Luxembourg’s heavy industry and public transportation.
  • The Solution? Creating the country’s first complete territorial green hydrogen ecosystem (Hydrogen Valley).
  • The Tailored Message: While the key message for industry and B2B partners focuses on economic viability and carbon footprint reduction, the narrative for citizens and media centers on how this project will allow the buses they use daily to run on clean energy produced in their own region. This unified elevator pitch enables any consortium partner to explain the value of LuxHyVal in one minute.

3. Omnichannel Strategy: Bringing the Right Message to the Right Channel

Once the visual identity and key messages are defined, the next step is deciding how to deliver them to each stakeholder group. Not all audiences consume information in the same way, so an effective communication strategy does not mean replicating the same content across all channels; it means adapting the message to the context and needs of each audience.

The website serves as the central hub for the project’s communication. It is the space where news, results, publications, events, and resources are gathered, making it the primary information repository for anyone interested in the initiative. Social media, on the other hand, allows for community building and maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the project ecosystem. In the case of LinkedIn, which is particularly relevant in R&D&i, the goal is not only to share news but to build visibility among companies, researchers, public administrations, and other European projects.

Newsletters facilitate regular communication with various stakeholder groups, bringing major project advancements directly to their inboxes. Similarly, press releases remain a valuable tool for expanding the reach of key milestones and fostering coverage in specialized and general media outlets.

The LuxHyVal Case: 

In a project like LuxHyVal, where top-tier industrial partners, public institutions, the scientific community, and local residents of Bascharage coexist, replicating the same message across all channels would have been a mistake. At R2M, we deployed an omnichannel strategy with clearly defined roles:

  • Web Platform (luxhyval.eu): Designed as the central hub of the project, bringing together general project information, deliverables, scientific publications, press releases, and event calendars to maintain the transparency required by the European Commission.

  • LinkedIn for the B2B and Institutional Ecosystem: The strategic network to connect the 17 consortium partners with companies across the hydrogen value chain, investors, and European policymakers.

  • Instagram for Local and Social Impact: We created a specific channel targeting citizens and local youth. Through this profile, we showcase the project’s most visual aspects, address safety questions regarding hydrogen, and explain how the initiative will improve local public transit.
  • Periodic Stakeholder Newsletter: We implemented a regular publication specifically designed to keep key actors in the sector, industry, and partners informed on progress, deliverables, and milestones achieved over the life of the project.

  • Press Releases for Media Outlets: We coordinate strategic press releases aimed at local and international media to announce major project moments (such as the official launch or regulatory milestones), securing wide-reaching media coverage.

However, an omnichannel strategy is not just about having a presence on different platforms. It also means maximizing the value of generated content. A single result can be transformed into a website article, a LinkedIn carousel, an event infographic, an explanatory video, or an outreach article. Adapting the format to each channel extends the message’s reach, engages different audiences, and maintains coherent communication without multiplying the consortium’s workload.

Ultimately, the success of an omnichannel strategy depends not on the number of channels used, but on the ability to integrate them into a shared narrative. When every platform fulfills a specific function and all content aligns with the same strategy, communication ceases to be a collection of isolated actions and becomes a powerful tool to amplify project impact.

From the Lab to the Screen: Choosing the Right Format for Each Story

Defining a communication strategy and key messages is only the first step. The next challenge is converting the knowledge generated by the project into content that captures attention, facilitates understanding, and sparks interest across diverse audiences.

European projects produce technical reports, scientific publications, and deliverables essential for documenting research progress. However, these formats are not always suitable for explaining innovation outside the consortium. Communication also means knowing how to adapt content without compromising scientific rigor.

At R2M Spain, we believe the format is never the starting point. Before deciding whether a story should become a video, an interview, or an infographic, we ask ourselves what we want to achieve and who we want to reach. Only then do we select the best tool to maximize its impact.

1) Explaining Technology Visually

Some technologies are difficult to grasp through text alone. In such cases, animated videos or motion graphics make it possible to explain complex concepts in a clear, dynamic, and accessible way, serving as an excellent entry point for audiences unfamiliar with the scientific or technological field.

The LuxHyVal Case: 

Instead of explaining electrolyzer mechanics using technical diagrams or specialized jargon, we looked for a story that would bring the technology closer to anyone. The protagonist of the video is a drop of water from a Luxembourg valley who, narrating in the first person, shares her journey: from water to green hydrogen through the process of electrolysis. This storytelling technique humanized a complex technology and demonstrated, in a simple and memorable way, how green hydrogen contributes to decarbonizing industry and transport. The result was a versatile audiovisual piece designed to be reused across the website, social media, presentations, and events—maximizing the impact of a single piece of content. 2) Humanizing Innovation

Behind every European project are researchers, engineers, and professionals who work for years to turn an idea into a real-world solution. Revealing this human side not only brings science closer to society, but also builds trust and strengthens a sense of belonging within the consortium itself.

With this goal in mind, the #FacesOfLuxHyVal campaign was created. Representatives from each consortium partner shared—via short LinkedIn video interviews—their role in the project, the challenges they face, and what motivates them to be part of the initiative. Rather than simply introducing partners, the campaign put a face to innovation and showed that the success of a European project depends, above all, on the people who make it happen.

3) Infographics: Simplifying Without Losing Rigor

Not all information needs to be turned into a video. In many cases, a well-designed infographic is the best way to explain a technology architecture, summarize pilot results, or visualize a value chain.

These resources condense large volumes of information into a clear and attractive format, making them easy to digest for both technical and non-specialized audiences. Furthermore, they are highly versatile pieces that can be reused in presentations, events, social media posts, press releases, or promotional materials—maximizing the reach of a single content asset.

For example, in LuxHyVal, we used an infographic to visually explain the project’s replication potential. Instead of using several paragraphs to describe how the model developed in Luxembourg integrates technological, regulatory, social, and economic aspects before expanding to other territories, we condensed all that information into a single graphic asset. The infographic demonstrates how Luxembourg serves as a flagship demonstrator, validating a complete green hydrogen ecosystem that can later be transferred to Central and Eastern Europe and, ultimately, the rest of the continent. In this way, a complex concept like territorial scalability can be understood at a single glance.

The Value of Working with a Specialized Communication Partner

After considering all the above, it might seem that communication is simply a matter of picking the right channels, designing a few assets, and posting content with some frequency. However, the reality of a European project is very different.

Researchers and engineers know the technology they are developing better than anyone. They design the algorithms, validate the pilots, analyze the results, and write the scientific papers. But for that very reason, they rarely have the time—or necessarily the communication expertise—to transform that knowledge into stories that resonate with different audiences.

It requires understanding the technology, identifying which results have the highest potential for impact, translating highly specialized concepts without losing scientific rigor, and building a coherent narrative that accompanies the project throughout its lifecycle.
