Monitoring: The Key to Empowerment and Energy Sovereignty

Monitorización La llave para el empoderamiento y la soberanía energética

The geopolitical instability we have been experiencing recently is fueling public mistrust in traditional energy systems. Global electricity prices are closely tied to energy resources currently located in war zones or in neighboring areas at risk of foreign intervention.

This energy situation is increasingly driving the use of renewable natural resources, not only on a large scale but also at the consumer level.

Renewable self-consumption via solar panels has grown dramatically over the past 10 years. From 2018 to 2025, the total installed capacity in residential homes, industry, and businesses has risen from 300 to 9,600 MW—a 3,200% increase, a figure so staggering it seems almost unreal.

This trend is not limited to individual rooftop installations but has expanded to organizations and cooperatives in the form of Energy Communities and Shared Self-Consumption groups. These entities allow for the sharing of installation costs, reducing upfront expenses and providing access to joint long-term financing, thereby alleviating costs that, in many cases, would be difficult to bear individually.

“We are witnessing an unprecedented democratization of access to energy. The challenge is no longer technological, but rather one of understanding and management on the part of the user.”

— Lucas Porto, Energy Services Coordinator at R2M.

Monitoring as Education

Despite the growth of self-consumption and local-scale renewable energy installations, significant barriers to their adoption and acceptance still exist, primarily of a social nature.

There is a lack of information regarding the benefits of participating in these initiatives, a gap that extends to all aspects of the renewable energy installation process, from design through to operation. Poorly designed systems, assumptions that lead to the installation of more solar panels and batteries than necessary, self-consumption calculations based on falsified data, with projected savings assuming electricity prices far higher than those paid by users… and the list goes on.

The lack of information limits users’ ability to make informed decisions and make the most of their energy.

Visualice Platform and Information Hub punto-e: R2M’s tools

At R2M Solution Spain, we have set ourselves the goal of breaking down all the knowledge barriers that exist between users and their energy consumption. We are dedicated to facilitating access to the information needed not only to make informed decisions about investments in renewable energy, but also to promote energy independence, market awareness, and active citizen participation.

At R2M Solution Spain, we advocate for monitoring as a tool for education and empowerment. But what is monitoring? Monitoring isn’t simply about displaying numbers and results on a screen; monitoring is about connecting concepts and fostering curiosity and understanding of the tools we have.

As Lucas points out: “Monitoring only provides real value when it allows us to understand the ‘why’ behind the data, not just the ‘what.’ That knowledge is what turns the user into an active agent within the energy system.”

To make this possible, we have developed our own tools that transform data into useful insights for people. Our Visualice platform, together with our punto-e information hub (one-stop-shop), centralizes and organizes all the relevant data, concepts, and questions we have gathered throughout our experience. The goal is to present the information clearly so that users understand how much they are consuming and spending, how they are doing so, and, above all, why.

For monitoring, we connect directly to energy distribution data or install smart meters. If renewable energy is available, we also integrate that data into the system.

With all this information, our algorithms reconstruct the key calculations that matter to the user and help answer questions such as: Why am I not saving as much as I expected? Why am I generating so much surplus? What can I do to make better use of my energy?

Support from the very beginning

Our monitoring supports users long before installation begins: from the project’s conceptualization through to its final operation. The analyses we conduct utilize all available user data: actual consumption curves, generation simulations tailored to the user’s location and characteristics, electricity prices, and consumption habits. All data is collected, applied, and presented with complete transparency to create a project in which the user feels a sense of ownership.

We include strategies for applying energy allocation coefficients, the effects of storage, and sizing calculations for photovoltaic installations. All these elements are shared with participants so that they can take ownership of this energy knowledge and drive the necessary paradigm shift.

Our monitoring solution is not rigid: it adapts to the specific needs of each project, displaying the most relevant information based on users’ interests and fostering co-creation at every stage, including post-implementation monitoring.

Knowledge as a driver of change

Monitoring is the driving force behind the change needed for the new energy paradigm. Understanding how energy is generated and consumed is the only real path to energy sovereignty. If data does not drive knowledge, it is not enough; our goal is for every user to become an active and informed participant in the system.

Do you want to take full control of your energy? If you’re looking to gain a thorough understanding of your energy consumption, explore realistic opportunities for self-consumption, and make informed decisions, R2M Solution Spain is here to guide you every step of the way.
