BatOpt Design: the tool for assessing the profitability of industrial batteries

Does your industrial company generate solar energy but you don’t know if investing in batteries is profitable? BatOpt Design is the solution that R2M Solution has developed in the SENIA project to answer exactly that question.
Imagine being able to know, before investing a single pound, how much money you would save with a battery, what size you really need, and how long it would take to recoup your investment. That is exactly what BatOpt Design does: it is an intelligent pre-design and feasibility tool that calculates the optimal sizing of industrial battery energy storage systems (BESS) for industrial plants with on-site renewable energy consumption.
The tool works as an advanced simulator that analyses three key aspects of your project:
- Technical Feasibility: What battery capacity do you need?
BatOpt Design studies your energy consumption patterns, your photovoltaic production, and the characteristics of your plant to suggest the optimal battery size in a battery environment. It is not about installing the largest possible battery, but the one that best suits your real needs. - Economic Viability: How much money will you save?
The tool accurately calculates how much you will reduce your electricity bill and the return on investment of battery storage for industrial plants, making better use of your solar energy systems (or any other form of self-consumption), selling surpluses at the best times, and avoiding consumption when electricity is most expensive. It also tells you how long it will take to recoup your investment (CAPEX) considering operational savings (OPEX).

BatOpt Design not only considers your pocket, it also calculates the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by maximising the use of your local renewable energy instead of consuming electricity from the grid.
How does it work internally?
BatOpt Design integrates several intelligent components:
Detailed physical models that simulate how the battery would perform in your plant: how much energy it can store, how it degrades over time, how many charge and discharge cycles it can withstand, and how this affects its service life.
Electricity market models that predict energy prices at different times of the day and calculate when it is best to charge your battery (when electricity is cheap or your solar production is high) and when to discharge it (when prices rise or you need to cover peaks in demand).
Advanced optimisation algorithms that find the perfect configuration: the optimal battery sizing for industry that maximises your financial savings and on-site renewable energy consumption while minimising your industrial CO₂ emissions, all at the same time.
Results you can expect:
Simulations carried out in the SENIA project show that industries can:
- Increase their renewable self-consumption from 41–45% (without batteries) to 65–70% (with the optimal storage system)
- Significantly reduce operating costs by avoiding consumption during peak hours and making better use of locally generated solar energy
- Generate additional income by selling surplus energy at the most favourable times on the market
- Reduce CO₂ emissions by replacing grid consumption with stored renewable energy
Who is BatOpt Design for?
This tool is designed for:
- Industries with photovoltaic installations (or other forms of self-consumption) that want to know whether adding batteries is profitable.
- Energy suppliers who want to offer storage solutions to their industrial customers with solid data.
- Energy consultants who need to carry out rigorous feasibility studies for BESS projects.
- Sustainability managers looking to decarbonize their industrial plants.
BatOpt Design removes the uncertainty from investing in industrial batteries, facilitating informed decisions about profitability, sizing and optimisation of industrial self-consumption. You no longer have to decide blindly: the tool gives you concrete figures, realistic scenarios and a comprehensive assessment so you can make the best decision for your business and the planet.

Buildings already feature advanced technology, but they still fail to exploit their full energy potential. The problem is not a lack of solutions, but rather a lack of coordination between systems. The Building Optimizer integrates everything into a single intelligence capable of optimizing the building globally.

In energy communities, household electricity consumption does not always coincide with periods of peak renewable production. The Demand Response Electric Optimizer, developed by R2M's R&D+i department, proposes an innovative solution to align both factors. Through predictions of photovoltaic production, energy demand, and user availability, the tool suggests when to perform domestic activities—such as running the washing machine or dishwasher—thereby improving the utilization of local energy and fostering more participatory energy management.

In this article, we present the Thermal Production Units Optimizer, a solution developed by R2M's R&D+i department aimed at maximizing the efficiency of heat pumps, cascade systems, and thermal storage. Through advanced optimization strategies, the tool reduces electricity consumption, improves the utilization of available renewable energy, and operates equipment under its most efficient conditions, both in existing buildings and from the design phase of new installations.
